Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). EMDR is an evidenced based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation (BLS) ─ tapping, auditory tones or eye movements to stimulate the brain similar to the Rapid Eye Movement(REM) sleep phase. This helps a person process a memory and makes the memory less distressing. EMDR has been known to help people with PTSD(Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), anxiety, depression, grief, panic attacks, phobias and past abuse(physical, emotional, and sexual). Processing past memories can help a person change negative beliefs that developed. For example, a person may go from believing I am unworthy to believing I am worthy. You may also find EMDR effective if you find it difficult to discuss past events. EMDR can help heal distressing memories from events that happened years ago or in the present.
